S. Michael Levin, Of Counsel to Winograd Shine Land & Finkle, represents clients in litigation, trial and alternative dispute resolution matters, internal corporate investigations, as well as counseling clients on non-profit issues.
S. Michael Levin has practiced law since 1970 as a litigator and corporate general counsel in the public and private sectors. During that time, he has successfully represented corporate and individual clients in complex litigation, partnership disputes (including securing a $160 million settlement for a client); defense of shareholder and consumer class actions; defense of director, attorney, accountant and trustee liability matters; defense and prosecution of RICO claims; creditor rights actions; non-compete agreements; bankruptcy; and internal corporate investigations. He served as court-designated defense liaison and settlement counsel in law suits resulting from the failure of an insurer of state financial institutions; and represented corporate and individual clients in IRS audits, grand jury, SEC and other federal and state investigations and proceedings.
He is also General Counsel for Japonica Partners, which makes entrepreneurial co-investments in underperforming global large caps, providing entrepreneurial returns for accomplished money managers who succeed with top quartile performance, and for the Charles & Agnes Kazarian Eternal Foundation, a private operating foundation that seeks to empower Armenians living in both the Diaspora and Armenia through education, technology, and healthcare.
Mr. Levin was a partner with Edwards & Angell, serving as Chairman of its Litigation Department, and with McDermott, Will & Emery. Before entering private practice, Mr. Levin held positions as Attorney-in-Charge of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Southeast Organized Crime Strike Force, Deputy Chief Counsel for the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, and Trial Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice. Among his public service awards, Mr. Levin received the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award, the U.S. Department of Justice’s second highest award, for initiating and spearheading the National Waterfront Corruption Investigation, which resulted in convictions of more than 100 union officials and corporate executives.
Mr. Levin received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The George Washington University in 1966 and earned his law degree from the National Law Center at George Washington University in 1969. He was law clerk for the Honorable Edward A. Beard in the District of Columbia. Mr. Levin is admitted to practice in Rhode Island and Florida, and before several Federal District Courts, Courts of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Rhode Island Bar Foundation. He has served as President, Federal Bar Association, South Florida Chapter, and Secretary of the Rhode Island Chapter.
Mr. Levin has held positions in various capacities for philanthropic organizations in Rhode Island. He has spoken at law schools, universities and bar association seminars and served as Adjunct Professor for the University of Miami Law School Trial Advocacy program. |
